The Great Southern Reef is one of Australia's most iconic underwater ecosystems, stretching more than 8,000 kilometres along our southern coastline. Its kelp forests form the ecological foundation of our cool-water marine ecosystems, supporting extraordinary biodiversity, coastal communities and billions of dollars in economic activity. Yet despite this significance, many Australians have never heard of it.

The Great Southern Reef Foundation exists to change that. We connect science, storytelling and communities to inspire Australians to see, understand and care for this remarkable ecosystem. From documentary filmmaking and educational resources to media engagement, science communication and national partnerships, we work to bring the Great Southern Reef into the national conversation and help secure its future.

Support from the PMF Foundation is helping us develop the Great Southern Reef Integrated Monitoring Program (GSR-IMP) - a shared national vision for coordinated biodiversity monitoring across Australia's kelp forests. By bringing together researchers, Traditional Owners, governments and communities, we are laying the foundations for better understanding, earlier detection of change and more informed decisions to safeguard one of Australia's greatest natural treasures.
